I'm a newbie to the In/Out Board engines. I bought a Bayliner Capri. It's a early 80's model that's been sitting for 2 years and I think the engine siezed(Can't turn crankshaft with wrench), strainer housing is missing from the heat exhanger, raw water copper pipe has a crack in it! Rust build up on altenator, starter, copper hose slip on flange.

1) Is it worth the time or should I just start looking for a used engine.
2) What type of engine can the 270 outdrive handle?

Sorry for rambling but it can be very frustrating.

The 270 can handle a 350 Chevy with no problems. Once you have the proper gear ratio, which is a lot different than the 4 cylinders.
You would also need a different exhaust Y going to the transom. Then you have the problem of bellhousings and motor mounts and ----------

I'd be Much More Concerned whether that Hull is Even Worth dropping Any Money into,..........

A Junk Motor is Probably the Least of that boats Problems......................

Actually the Hull was the reason i picked up this boat. It's in excellent condition from bow to stern, just the hickup on the motor.

Anywho i'm gonna try the mystery oil in the sparkplug chamber theory and this time use a LONNGGG pipe for leverage. Let you all know in a couple of days.

Really love the 350 Chevy idea tho.

Once you assess the amount of work needed on the engine you can tell if you want to go with the chevy replacement or not but that sounds like a lot of retrofitting work too. the vp125a is an engine that will last a long time with proper maintenance though.

Nice looking Bayliner too, did you add the sunscreen or was it on the boat already- I have been thinking about getting one for mine.

Joe

The top came with the boat. I bought this boat 2 weeks ago for $500.00. I thought it was a steal. Heck! The trailor alone is worth atleast 500.00 bucks.

Yes sir it's a 19'Bayliner Capri AQ125/270 VP. The interior is fine also carpeted and leather just needs a little polishing.

Looks like you did get a deal.

Good luck with the engine repairs. Parts are available new for $$$ but you can get some off of Ebay too.

Joe

Re: Old Volvo Penta AQ125A / 270

I bet it wasn't winterized. Look for a replacement motor like the one you have now. Like said before, outdrives are specific to certain motors (4, 6, 8 cylinder motors have there own gear ratio). If you are not replacing the whole package then again stick with the motor size you have.

PS My 270 over there can handle 330hp but it is made for 8 cylinder motor.

Hey Pin if thats a 1984 then I have the same boat.I'm pretty happy with mine and like you I got a good deal. The AQ125A is a pretty basic engine which makes it easier for me to fix.The internal cooling system is good for boats that run in the salt H2O.The power isn't the greatest. With a 14x17 prop I only get about 32mph.Thats not much but I get there quick. The 270 outdrive lacks any trim control.Thats the only bad thing I can say about that.I personally think that A 4cyl.is not enough power for a 19ft.but I enjoy this boat and I think you will enjoy yours as well.

I think you better stay with a marine alt.If you cant find a Volvo shop go a auto parts place and ask if they carry marine parts.I think Napa carries SIERRA PARTS.I have the book in front of me and they have some options for you. They carry many Volvo parts.
