I am having a problem getting the starter drive gear to line up with the flywheel. It is a volvo 280 drive and a rebuilt 0010 casting # 350 block. My guess is the old style flywheel is to small for the new style bolt pattern on the starter. What are my options as to get the extra 1/2inch i need to contact the flywheel. The bell housing was fitted for an inline bolt pattern starter, The new engine is fitted for only the offset bolt pattern starter... Any ideas. Will a bigger flywheel get me going, Is there enough room in the bell housing for the bigger flywheel?

Ayuh,.....

If the Block is only drilled for the Staggered Pattern,....
You Must use the 14" Flywheel......

I don't know if it'll fit in your outdrive.....

It's entirely Possible, you have the Wrong Block.....

Bellhousing's and flywheels kind of have to match. Where did you get the bell housing and flywheel from?
That's why when I built my 454 for my Volvo I bought a bell housing kit off of eBay for 12.5 or 14" flywheel's. My first thought when I started the project was I must keep the original 14.5" flywheel that came with the motor for a couple reasons. The main reasons was for the motor's balance and for starter alignment.
So I guess the place to start is. How big is your flywheel? Is you block drilled for straight or offset starter bolt pattern (mine was both, you may want to check again). Where did the flywheel come from (year, size). Off of what did you get the bell housing from (year, motor size). Sounds like you have a miss match of some kind.
The first place I would start is getting the right flywheel for the motor so the starter lines up is a must. From there the bell will fit over it or not. Some do some don't. It all depends on the year it came from. If not there is others out here that will.

Like this one.

It's not that bad. The kit above was only $500. I wasn't going to take a chance when I went to a Chevy B/B from a Mopar S/B.
When I originally put the mopar in the boat I went through what you are now but a hundred times worse. When I was putting the boat back together when I first got it many years ago one thing that was missing was the original flywheel (a hot rodder must have snatched it). I spent a good part of a year trying to find one. For that matter this was my first post on iboats. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=147398&highlight=chrysler+flywheel Over a year after I started the hunt I found one (and I mean I only found one). After I spent $800 + shipping on a flywheel/bellhousing combo from a "broker" from NY who got it from a guy in Cali. It shipped from the west coast to where I live on the east coast Sept 10th 2001. We all know what happened the next day.:( But putting that aside think about how long it took to get a large chunk of steel and a big box with a bellhousing rattling around inside (the guy didn't pack it to well) took to get. The bell came about a month later:rolleyes:. There was snow on the ground when I saw the part I needed the flywheel and that was after so many phone calls I couldn't tell you.
So suck it up and hunt eBay but you are going to need the size of the flywheel and the rest of the info said before or you will be stabbing in the dark at the right one.
PS You aren't even sure if your bellhousing will fit a bigger flywheel yet. You may get off real lucky by getting the right flywheel for the block and it fits. That would be real easy.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.... lol
If Ive learned one thing about boats its sticking with a chevy. more parts cheaper
I just keep bashing myself for not realizing the prob earlier.
I just want to get back to the water with this thing and its killing me seeing it in the front yard. All the neighbors are calling code inforcement about it. It really sucks that 86% of americans dont know the neighbor next door to them. I only need another half inch to make it right. from what ive measured im pretty sure it will fit. All I would need to grind is where the gear pops out of the starter and rubs the bell housing about an 1/8 of an inch by a 1/2 inch.
