Hello, I'm new to the forums here and I have a few questions I'm hoping somebody could answer for me. I recently came in to a 1983 Renken 19ft I/O with a Volvo 230 engine in it. I rigged up my old car battery to hook up to the boat just so I could test the electronics and see if I can't get it running.
I have alittle experience with car engines, not much with carburetors so im kindof winging this project and learning as I go. I took the carb apart, just the top half, and it all seemed pretty clean, except for a small ammount of stale gas sitting in the bowl. The Oil in the engine is clean as a whistle, and just from looking into the valve cover the internals look clean too.
Today I turned it over by hand to make sure it wasn't siezed, which it wasnt. I cranked it a few times with the key and got nothing. Since I know the fuel is bad, I figured I would just check the spark, so I put a driver in the plug cap, about 2mm away from the Valve cover and got no spark, tried again same thing with the coil wire and got no spark. It's been sitting for a few years I believe, so I'm guessing just a bad coil? I took the distro cap off and it looks like somebody recently replaced the cap and rotor because they are immaculate aside from alittle corrosion on the prongs. Bad coil, or should I look alittle deeper before I go and buy one?
How should I go about the gas problem? Is there an easy way to drain the tank? According to the gas guage the tank is completley empty, but I don't know how accurate that's gonna be after sitting for so long.
For the fuel pump, it's probly bad after sitting so long, but how would I test that in a boat? I have an electronic bolt-on fuel pump that I bought for my 8 cyl Mustang (also carburated) but never used, could I use that? It says it's for 4,6 and 8 cyl engines.
I'm posting a couple pictures of the engine with this, possibly somebody with some experience could get something out of it and let me know what I should look for?
Any help is much appreciated, again it's a 1983 Renken I/O 19ft w/ a Volvo 230, and I think it's an original engine.
Maybe somebody could tell me what this cord is for? It looks all screwed up...
