i have just bought a boat and trailer. the trailer is a 1992 load rite and has old tires with the size E-78-14 on 5 hole galv rims. Load range B.I don't know how to translate that into tire sizes that are being sold now. the tread is around 145 MM across and the sidewall height is around 160 ish...
I think I'd like to keep the rims as they prob came with the trailer and the offset should be right... any advice on the correct size translation is appreciated.
I have a 1977 17 ft sea sprite with a 120 Johnson on it. the tires say like 1400# at 32 psi. The boat runs around 1300# and the motor another 360# plus gas and stuff gotta add another 100-150# say 1800# total. thanks JG

As the original tire is quite narrow to start with and the load rating required not that high an ST185/80-14 might also fit the bill. May be easier to get "under the fender" than a 205 wide tire. However, if you can fit an ST205/75-14 it's better

thanks to you both. I really am concerned about getting it under the fender...see pics. therefore I don't think i will order through internet. I think i need to go to a tire store... given the pics of the e78-14 would you agree?

I don't expect the diameter to be a problem but the width of the 205. The original is closer to a 185 and fills the fender width already. My guess is that it really is teh best idea to buy the first set at a local place where you can hold the tires to the trailer and see how it will turn out.
