Old Trailer Axle

Hi all,<br /><br />I have a question regarding the axle on my trailer. I pulled the hubs to replace the races/bearings. There is a ring that sits against the back of the spindle - one side spins freely, and on the other, it's stationary. <br /><br />Question: What are these for, and, should they spin, or should they remain stationary? They don't fit thru the rear seal - they appear to be a spacer or something. <br /><br />The spindles are 1", with the hub dia. 1.98". I don't know who made the trailer, but the hubs are stamped "HM". <br /><br />Thanks<br />Rick K

Rick if my memory serves me right they called those dust rings<br />Theory was they would keep foreign stuff out away from your seal
