1977 140 HP OMC Outdrive- When reducing throttle position from WOT toward idle (neutral) the engine will suddenly speed up like the transmission shifted to neutral. This happens when the engine is at about 1500 RPM. Further reduction in throttle position engages the gearing until the throttle is moved to neutral. No other shift issues noted. Did not do this last year. Checked battery voltage-at full charge.

lkforney,
If that's an electric shift drive with solenoid activated springs, you might check to make sure your shift/accel lever is delivering 12V along its entire length of travel. Spring will release if solenoid doesn't get voltage. Could you have a short or dead spot that cuts voltage to the solenoid when the lever is in a certain position? This could become trouble because the springs aren't designed to engage above 650 rpm and could be damaged if engaged at higher rpms.

BlackSmoke
