We are activating a boat / 2 cycle motor that has been in storage in a hot climate for several years without being started... The fuel tank is about 1/2 full of old gas/oil and the motor has been difficult if not almost impossible to start.. When connected to an auxilliary tank with new fuel.. no problem... QUESTION: Once we have drained the fuel tank of the old fuel, what is the LEGAL and SAFE (Environment) way to dispose of bad mixed oil/gas fuel (approx 6 gallons) in the state of California?

Re: Old (stale) Outboard Fuel Disposal???

i posted this same topic last week.welcome to the old motor club.the consensus seemed to be either use in lawn mower w/ no problems or add some to a full tank of gas in your car.not willing to put in my truck so i just added new gas to the 2-3 gallons that was in my 16 gallon tank.was hoping there was a place to take it but apparently not.maybe a burn pit.hope this helps.good luck!

County or state authorities are responsible for disposal programs.
It may or may not be free.
It may or may not be convenient.

My county has 2 days a year that you can drop it off at a HAZMAT site.
Its pretty funny watching 3 guys in full hazmat body suits walk up to your car, only to have you hand them a 1/4 quart of paint.

Some service stations will take small amounts and turn it in with their recycle oil.

i'm a retire building contractor, when i retired, there were what seemed like 100's of old leftover rusty paint cans. they had a collection day. you should have seen there faces when i pull up with pickup load to the top of the bed with old rust cans. they acted like i was a martian. to this day i don't know what was in some of them.

I use old gas or gas/oil mix in my vehicule making sure I fill up with high test gasoline and I add some injector cleaner.

Never had any problem ...

If you don't know how long it's been in the tank, safest bet is disposal at your approved local facility. If its of known age you can recycle it through your car/mower etc. diluted with good fresh gas as the others have said. Really old, funky, varnishy fuel should not be run in any vehicle/engine.
