This is my first time posting on iboats.com. I typically use the sight to gain valuable info, by reading through the threads. On with the info. I have a 1967 sea ray srv180. It has a mercruiser 160hp (250ci chevy) with (from what I gather) a type 1 outdrive. With 165/162c gear ratio. The boat has been sitting since 2002. It does not turn over, so either the engine or outdrive is froze up/ stuck. I have plans on rebuilding the motor soon. (I'm very inclined in that department) But want to gather as much info as I can on the outdrive and related parts, Before I attempt to play "the mad scientist" so now to the questions, In which I lean greatly towards you intelligent gentlemen for. Lol.
1. In a previous post, Don said an automotive fuel pump on a marine application is a no, no! Why is that?
2. What are zinc anodes, does my type 1 outdrive have them?
3. Can anyone point me to a good website that explains checking alignment in a outdrive? Perferferably a site with pics/vids.

If Any of the information that I've given sounds off or incorrect, please correct me.

welcome aboard

1. because your boat will blow up. Marine fuel pumps are designed so when they fail, the fuel is pumped into the carb to prevent fuel from entering the bilge and blowing up your boat.
2. the anodes are sacrificial zinc nodes intended to dissolve due to corrosion before the aluminum in the drive does. yes, your MC has them, and they probably need to be changed.
3. go to youtube and search for mercruiser alignment.

a couple of things to look at. if the boat sat outside for any length of time, check the transom and stringers for rot. no sense working on the motor and drive if the structure is rotten.

On the fuel pump - ironically enough, in 1967 they probably used a pump with no provision for the "overflow" tube. They didn't seem as "cautious" back in the day. Not suggesting using an automobile pump of course. You can buy a marine pump at various vendors - including iboats. Welcome aboard!

On the fuel pump - ironically enough, in 1967 they probably used a pump with no provision for the "overflow" tube. They didn't seem as "cautious" back in the day. Not suggesting using an automobile pump of course. You can buy a marine pump at various vendors - including iboats. Welcome aboard!

Thank you for everyone's help. I had plans on checking the stringers and transom for decay. But still wanted to gather info. A person can't learn enough. Specially in this hobby. If all looks well below, I will order up a marine grade fuel pump to replace the micro death trap that's currently bolted to the motor. I'm gona do more reading on "zinc anodes" makes perfect sense though. We'll that again for the help.
