I posted earlier about a merc 470 3.7 with oil in the sump.Let me ask how can water enter the engine with a bad riser or maybe a riser gasket? I have been around engines forever and can't seem to wrap my head around how it could enter through there. Am I missing something???brain fart??what? Please end this. I am pulling the riser off the manifold tommorrow.I was told "good luck getting those apart" any tricks on separating them would be great. Thanks

Water can get on top of a piston through an open exhaust valve. To go from there into the oil, it has to go past the rings.

Take the 4 nuts/bolts off and usually a hit on the side of the elbow with a mallet gets them loose. On rare occasions it takes a bit more effort.

Re: old question to new thread...

Need to determine if it is water or antifreeze. Is the weep hole on the lower starboard side of the engine waterpump clear?

Yes weep hole clear. I do notice a very damp area at the base of the riser.I am hoping for a gasket change or tell me should I just plan on doing both riser and gasket?I look at the way the riser is made with a square hole with 2 slots on the side.,obviously the larger is exhasut is the small 2 where the sea water goes up into the riser and then mixes with exhaust to get expelled?
When a riser goes bad where does it fail? That will help me understand how this concept works...thanks guys for the help

Update on this thread...with a suction tool I started removing antifreeze from the tank/riser.I immediatly saw how thick it was and it sure looks like clean oil to me. I just did the oil change and the milky oil is what I thought was mixed with water not anti.WRONG!!The weep hole is dry so now what???where is that coming from? I did the compression test and all 4 were good so not a head gasket. Help.....how can I test before taking this thing apart or scraping..I just bought the boat!

Recently posted(merc 470 oil in sump)and (old question new thread) but here's the real scoop. I pumped out the anti freeze from my merc 470 3.7 tank/riser and it was very slippery. I just did the oil change and it is milky and the dipstick reads correct. The anti freeze looks like fresh oil to me. Yes the weep hole is free and dry so now what do I do...compression test was good on all cyl.puzzled???
