old outboard

I recently inherited a old kiekhaefer mercury 4.0 hp outboard. this thing looks new yet i am told it is a 1973. serial # 3396891. <br />It requires an external tank,i have not been able to find the fuel line fitting locally. also am i crazy to run this thing every weekend. it has good compression. but because of the age should i make it a nice addition to my boating room in the house.

Yea it's a 73. <br /><br /> http://www.pfs-ware.com/kwast/merc_serial_number_reference_gui.htm <br /><br />Run 50:1 The fuel connector is in the boating isle at Walmart.<br /><br />Change out the gear oil annualy and change out the impeller at least once before you put it into regular service.

Hi TM,<br /> You're not going to find that connector at WalMart. It's the smaller version of the Merc fuel connector. You might want to call around to a few Merc dealers in your area, as they might have one in stock. Last I checked that connector was kinda pricey at over $30.00 list. If you can't turn one up locally, try www.oldmercs.com.<br /><br /> Of course, with the spring garage sale season coming up, there's a good chance after you shell out the $30-$40 for a new connector, you'll find three complete tanks for $10.00...
