I have an old 50-hp merc, late 1960's. It runs like a clock, and everything works okay. The vent were the water comes out is just a trickle at idle, and more or less a stream at full throttle. How bad is this? Do I need to worry a whole bunch? Remember, I don't know anything about outboards. Not yet. Thanks in advance.

It sounds fairly normal. Many older outboards were not designed to spray a high-pressure stream out of the cooling system indicator. Some engines of that vintage had no water pump "tell-tale" at all.

Have the water pump impeller changed, if that has not already been done. As you'll learn, that is a regular maintenance chore on outboards.

The pee hole as it might be called sometimes gets stuff in it and might need probing with a wire or something while it's running. If that doesn't seem to make it spray better you probably are due for a waterpump replacement.

Check with the dealer for a "impeller".
It's very easy to replace.
If youdo not you will burn the engine
soon er or later.
You are just getting the water to keep it
cool and that it.
