Last year i bought a 1978 searay with a mercruiser 898. The boat is 18 feet long and runs like a maniac, except when you throttle down. Say you slow down to just above idle and are looking at the fishfinder, that is when it stalls everytime. The other problem is when you put it in gear it goes to dang fast to control easily right from the start. A buddy of mine thought the stalling might be from the float in the carb being bad? It has a rochester 2 barrel carb.I am still in the process of restoring it and these are the last to glitches keeping me from success. If there is any thoughts or advice out there it would be greatly appreciated.

I would not think the float would cause this problem, low speed jets dirty, vac leak, and someone has turned the idle speed up to try and overcome and now at idle you move faster than normal. I am thinking you need to clean and rebuild carb.

You may be better off posting this in the proper motor section above where the real engine guru's are.

Re: old new 1978 searay

both issue bespeak of a throttle cable not adjusted properly or a shift interrupt not adjusted properly or lower shift cable going bad.

The throttle cable is to stay at idle until the motor is in gear. If you look at it it should not move until you feel the motor going into gear. It sounds as if your's is moving before going into gear thus the high idle.

The outdrives on those do not like to come out of gear under a load, so a shift interrupt is installed. The purpose of this is to momentarily stall the motor when taking it out of gear so the gears will release. If your lower shift cable is going bad or the switch is not adjusted right then the switch will hang up and instead of momentarily stalling the motor it will kill the motor. In severe cases it won't work and the motor will stick in gear. I have had that happen.
