I am considering an old '68 Starcraft equipped witha Mercruiser 120 (152 Chevy) as a summer/fall toy project. Can anyone give me any info on this engine/drive? Are they fairly reliable and easy to work on for a shadetree mechanic?
Jason,

I'm familiar with the boat. It was my experience that an 85 hp. outboard would run with and sometimes outrun the 120's.

They ran smooth and quiet, that's why they were so popular.
Thanks Djohns. I am almost finished reworking a '76 16' t-hull with an 85 Johnson and thought this one might be fun. I would really like to use it as a cruiser on my often choppy local lake while getting better MPG than the Johnson and more umph to pull a skier up.
I have a 16'5" Galaxie tri-hull that has a 120 Mercrusier...has really surprized me.......it gets skier up with no problem .....will hit 40 mph on smooth water.....uses less than half the fuel used with my 80 hp merc skiing.....have a 19" prop.....it will redline it with 3 people in boat.......althogh its redline seems awefully low at just 4300......thinking of getting a 21" S/S and vent..... for same holeshot as current prop.....anyone had any experience here?
