I just bought a 1968 Merc 500 w/15" shaft.

My questions are as follows.

I was told it was a racing motor, that's why there is no alternator/generator
on the motor, how can I verify this?

Do I go with the standard 50:1 oil/fuel mixture?

On a 1964 13'8" glass runabout (about 600lbs) what would be a good pitch for the prop
or, anyone know the ?final drive ratio?

and lastly, is there _anywhere_ I can get specs on the motor? (hp/torque/*** cc's|ci?)

Thank You... This is my first boat & motor, I can't wait to get out on the water.

tony

Re: Old Merc Tips?

As far as a racing motor, I would have my doubts. Mercury in those years didn't have a alternator/generator. There is a electronic pack on the right side of the motor tha tcharges the battery, but it's not that much of a charge compared to todays motors.

A mixture of 50:1 is standard for Mercury.

As far as prop pitch, I would start with about a 17 and go from there. If you have a tach, keep it in the recemmended rpm range.

HAve fun with it and I hope that this helps
