old merc 1500 help

Hello all, this is my first post here on iboats I am working on my fist boat wich is an 85 monark fish and ski tha has an 1500 merc hanging off thae back. I believe the mec to b a 1974 model but am not real sure (the s/n is 3916067 if anyone knows how to check for me). I was just wondering if this is a good motor? Any known probs with these? The boat it self is going to be going though a complete rebuild and I will start my own thread on that (with lots of pics I promise was just want any info on motor I could get. thanks jason

The 1500 is a great motor if it is set up correctly. If you need parts there is still quite a lot out there. Overhauling the block is quite challenging but everything else is pretty straight forward. Take it one step at a time. Do a compression test first to make sure all 6 cyl are good. Depending on what you find there will help you make further decisions.
