I saw a boat for sale with a older model mercury 125hp. I was wondering what year(s) this motor was made .The owner says it just needs a water pump impeller. Is this an expensive problem to have fixed? Thanks for any info. Great board!

the impeller is a cheap fix, if you have a shop do it I think it is in the 70 dollar range. If you do it yourself it is real cheap, if you can get the lower unit to drop. A good Merc handbook will show you the steps. You want to have the compression checked on the power head. Check the lower unit oil to see if any metal shavings are visible. I would really want to take that boat on the water before purchase, the impeller is a cheap enough fix that I think most motivated sellers would take care of it before trying to sell it. Also if it is a first boat, get a friend with some knowledge to come check it out with you. Have them check the transom and hull, and all the other
essentials.

Good Luck!!

Kev is right on the mark when he advises you to thoroughly check out not only the engine, but the boat as well. You may end up spending way more money to make the boat seaworthy than what you originally paid.

Buyer beware!!

Good luck!

Walt
