Old Mariner 60 HP with a couple of issues (idle/slow speed and reverse-related)

I just purchased a Mariner 60 hp outboard engine that I have a couple of questions regarding:

- Is it possible to identify the age of the engine from the serial number? I know it's from late 70's or early 80's, but nothing more precise. The serial number is 675-30087.

- Are there any standard things I should look for, replace or do anything with on an engine as old as this one ?

- The engine runs fine when I give it some throttle, but on idle or low speeds it coughs (?) a little and does not run as smooth. Is there anything to do with this or is it just the result of an old engine ?

- When I put it in reverse the engine makes the same sound as when I try to put my car in reverse while still moving forward. It's not constant, but it makes that sound for about 1 second before it starts backing up. Can this be fixed without replacing any expensive parts? Perhaps by tightening something in the lower unit ?

Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated !

Serial number will give you the year. Double check that serial number. Change plugs and fuel filter, check compression and that noise is probably nothing. Make sure the idle rpm is correct.
