Just received this from a friend

Edit: I removed the Ad pic, as I agree with Bruce below. You can confirm it's a Hoax as the Ad notes their new 777, and picture shows an A380 - QC

He's also come up with an interesting theory on how the aircraft ended up where it appears to have done. And there IS precedent for this. Nav computer was programmed incorrectly, with the destination and the source transposed. The known flight path also bears this out. If the aircraft thought it was in Beijing and started heading north (remember that the auto-pilot thinks the destination is SOUTH of it's current location, then when the auto-pilot was tasked to take over, it would swing the aircraft around and try and head as far south of KL as Beijing is north of it.... Plot that on a map and you end up just about where they are looking....

Just begs the question... Why hasn't Malaysian Airlines put this theory out to the public?

BTW, it's not the pilots who program the auto-pilot, it's ground staff....

That ad sure hit the nail on the head!

Doesn't auto pilot use GPS? If that's the case it would return to Kuala Lumpur, wouldn't it? I have no idea. But I am not alone.

No, the nav computer uses GPS, but the auto-pilots still use inertial... Which means that they have to be told where they are at the beginning of each flight. If the origin is set wrong, it'll take you some place else...

That ad is also a hoax and iBoats shouldn't be perpetuating it. It's sick and tasteless.

Is that confirmed? We need HTBX_____ to check in here.

Also, does the transposed GPS discussion explain what the pilots were doing? Thinking no...

The company I used to work for use inertial navigation for the Tomahawk missile. They later were modified to use GPS. Hard to imagine a modern aircraft using solely inertial guidance.

There are a lot of nut job theories out there. I think this is just another one.
