My dad recently picked up a Johnson model TD20 5hp, serial #697633 from a garage sale for $75. Cosmetically its cherry, but obviously hadn't been run for severaly years. When I started it for the first time it took some adjusting on the needle valve to get it going but after that it ran like a top. One problem, it leaks gas profusely down the block, not exactly sure where from. Also some of the gaskets appear to be shot, with obious gaps and deterioration in the gasket material. Sorry I can't be more explicit in the description of the problem, I only worked with the motor for an hour or so one afternoon. When I found out how bad it leaked gas, I threw my old 3hp weedless on the boat and went hunting. Any suggestions on what the problem is/fixes? Thanks!

Ahoy, LabsNducks. Gawd, I love your handle; It just creates wonderful images in one's mind.

You probably have a stuck or heavy float in the carb.

If your friendly local Johnny dealer can't supply parts, try Twin Cities Outboard, in Minneapolis. If they don't have one, it never existed. I wish I could be more exact, but a recent crash lost me a lot of data.

Red sky at night, Mallards in the morning.

JB :)

JB-

Thanks a ton for the prompt reply, your diagnosis doesn't sound too severe. What about the gaskets, anything to worry about?
