I have an old Johnson motor Model #OD18H. It is obviously an 18 HP, but the codes I find refer only to the last letter(s) being the year. I think it is a 1956. Can anyone confirm or correct this (by the way, it still runs quite well)?

Hello.
Do you think it could be an RD18? That would make it a 1956 30 horse. And yes those are great old engines.

QD18 would make it a 1957 10 hp Johnson.Look closer at the model number and let us know.

Re: Old Johnson Motor

The 18hp would be an FD model. The QD models were all 10hp. However, 1956 and 1957 models of both used the same lower units, so it's possible someone broke the clamps at some point and replaced them with the wrong ones (bringing the wrong serial plate with it). Check to see if the serial number on the plate matches the serial on the freeze plug on the motor block. If they match, then you've got a 10hp. If they don't, then you may have an 18hp...
- Scott

Re: Old Johnson Motor

A closer look at the model # showed that it is indeed QD instead of OD. Thanks for the assistance gentlemen!
