I was working on the seat platform for the Skeeter and my son was messing around with an old johnson that my nephew dragged over to me last summer.

It has sat in the corner of the shop basically forgotten by me.

My son was able to get the recoil working, after robbing the pull rope off of the tiller( which he did not tell me about till later on):)

So he had me stop working on the bass boat and we started tinkering with the engine.

Pulled flywheel cover, cleaned points with emory board and put fly wheel assy and pull start back on, hey this old thing had spark on both spark plugs according to the spark tester, good blue spark.

did a compression check and had 60lbs on both cylinders.

shot some premix in the cylinders, pulled it a couple times felt good, installed plugs and the thing fired up, just burning the gas in cylinders.

I have never messed with an old jonny or tore a carb apart on one.

Definately need to rebuild carbs and water pump, kind of scared to touch it but my son is excited after he found out how old it was and it ran( future rude jonny man) He wants to get it running and take his mom fishing.

Are parts still available for this old an engine? If so where to order
I am not intending to really use it but since my son got interestd in it might as well help him get it going. thank for the replies.

Sure, that motor's basic format continued to be produced for many years. Parts are everywhere. They'll have the carb kit and water pump impeller right here at iboats.

Weren't the coils cracked?

Laingsoutboards (website) or Engine, Blade & Prop in Milwaukee are other good parts sources. Run it on the right fuel/oil mix, 16:1.

That's really a terrible engine, Wavrider.

You need to send it to me so I can dispose of it properly.

Umm. . . so, I lie a lot.

I don't think anyone ever made an outboard better than the JW series and their Evinrude cousins. It will make a rabid JohnnyRude lover of your son, just as one made a JohnnyRude lover of me back in the 50s.

Even today, you can't buy a better 3hp outboard.

As instructed by OMC, I ran 24:1 with TC-W oil or 16:1 with sae-30 motor oil. I recommend the 24:1 mix using TC-W3 oil.

Show some loyalty to the people who bring you this wonderful, free, site. Buy at iboats.

Re: old johnson jw-10

I looked at the coils through the flywheel and they were brown in color but did not se any cracks in them, I did not pull the flywheel off just the cover where I could lok at the points and check the gap

the engine looks pretty decent original paint and all, no corrosion, probaly sat in someones garage for years.

thanks for the tips on where to get parts, worried about carb as I know it is going to be a disaster.

That carb is simple to rebuild. Don't be concerned. The coils are a different story. If they are original they are no good. Even if they have a nice spark they will fail under compression..

On the other hand, if they aren't cracked, somebody has probably replaced them already. That's good!!

Thanks for all the replies.
Yes I usually purchase from the forum sponser's.

Looks like a new project for this summer. The kid is a perfectionist allready when it comes to turning wrenches.

This will be his project I will just supervise it.( seeing as how he took my old poulan chainsaw motor and plumber's strapped it to one of his bicycles) He got it to work, I made him tear it apart, looked like it would fall apart any moment.

I think I will get him to become a mamber so he can post his own questions about getting the jw-10 up and running

Ha Ha, I like your son's way of thinking! You'd better watch it or he may become an addict to fishing, hunting, and working on old boat motors. He needs to find a more healthy outlet for all his energy like most kids today..;)

you'll have to post some pics of his progress....I'm praying my 6yr. old likes to tinker like me....Got my fingers crossed.
Later,
JBJ

Re: old johnson jw-10

Ran some errands this morning, got back and the son had the carb off the jw-10 and tore apart:(

we cleaned it and put it back together, could not get any gas to the bowl.

so took carb back off and re-installed the float correctly, dont work to good upside down.

Plastic float with retainer clip for the needle so someone had rebuilt it once opun a time, carb was not really to dirty, kind of made sense as no fuel could getin it with float in backwards..

tinkered with the settings a little and she fires up and idles smooth as a babies ****.

Son is amazed still saying he cant believe it.

He's up there sanding the tank down and going paint it, it is his so at least he choose the same color paint:)

thanks for all the advice, grinning ear to ear and the son's hands are about as oil and grease stained as mine

Re: old johnson jw-10

Thanks, I will keep the carb in mind as the needle looked good but the adjustments ends outside the carb are hosed up and missing hardware.

Son is going to town on the cosmetics, I just went up to check on him and tell him get ready for dinner. noticed the spark plug wire holder was loose at the head bolt, went to tighten it and it feel off, IN MY HAND:confused:
so did the one above it, both on the port side.

Guess he is going to learn fast about corroded bolts 54 to 56 years old:)
I think he tried to remove the head so he could paint it also.

Need to replace head gasket anyway just for good measure but now going need take it to machine shop get the bolts removed, I am not going try mess with it myself.

Have to find an old john boat so he can putt around the lake this summer taking mom fishing while I drag his sister n her friends around on the tube

Re: old johnson jw-10

While I was waiting for the carbs on the 85 rude to soak in the carb cleaner, started messinf around with the JW-10.

Got the head off and 5 of the 6 bolts out, got to appreciate the power of pb blaster.

Had to drill one and re tap but it turned out good (whew)

I can get the impellar from this site but how about the head gasket?

The son will be hunting a boat to put this on real soon.

Thanks guys for the replies.

Head gasket is available for about $5.00 at your local Evinrude dealer, NAPA or here at iboats. Part number is BRP 0203130 or Sierra 18-38411.

Re: old johnson jw-10

Jb Jennings I cant seem to post a pic as the site says my pic to big a file.

I gues it is time to set up a photo bucket account, will get them on later this evening,

took the lu off, checked the impeller, new seals, new grommets, impellar had very little wear, the plate did not even have any marks from the im[peller wearing.

New impeller and head gasket on order.

Son found a gheenoo to put it on, so if I can contact the owner he might be putting around the lake soon

on photobucket, there is box on the lower left of the picture, clik that box of the pictures you want, then go to the bottom of the page, and clik on generate html. it will go to another page, about 3 sections down the page, it say thumbnails, clik in the middle of that section. it will say copied, then go to your post and clik paste.
