I have an old Johnson 115 hp. I was using out on the lake yesterday and I shut it off, when I went to start it back up it it was acting like it had no power. Anyways I got a tow in and when I got home I jumped the starter with cable and it would spin the flywheel but I couldn’t jump it from the silenoid. So I assume I need a new one. But I after trying to jump the starter with cables the second time , the starter would engage the flywheel and not spin very much. It was kind of choppy. I took the plugs out and it spins great. So do I need a new starter and silenoid? This is what I plan to do I just want to run it by people with more experience! Thanks!

Hard to say on that, so far.
Hows your battery? Try jumping off your car, thatl help isolate it down

The battery was 100% charged. I can try off my truck battery when I get home. I have another 90 hp Johnson that was slid the same thing and now the starter won’t even engage the flywheel. And I even greased the gears and all.?

Also the battery I used was a deep cycle. But I did purchase a marble battery and try it, but it was no different

How old is an ----" pld 115 hp Johnson " ---Need a model #-----If it shut down while running it is not a starter issue.-------Need to determine what is wrong.----Could be a gear box issue too.----Do a compression test.-----Has the water pump been maintained ?---Checked the gear oil ?-----Be a shame to buy a new starter and find out that there are other issues.

Careful where you put grease and how much. I never put any on the gears or the starter.
If you are jumping straight to the starter (with the juice from your truck) and it spins only with the plugs out then id be suspecting your jumper cables (so many of them look the part but are almost dead inside) or its your starter that needs work. They come apart and are quite serviceable
