Re: old johnson 18hp motor

First off I believe your motor may be an fd-18 1964 18 hp. As far as value there's no set price but if it turns over and is complete then it's worth something. Scraping outboard is a lose lose situation for everyone just not worth it. If your handy you could get it running with not to much effort

Re: old johnson 18hp motor

+1. The old 18-20 hp Johnson/Evinrude motors were some of the best pound for pound motors ever made and very sought after these days. I have a '66 20 hp myself and it's great. The motor is well worth saving. Assuming the compression is good, you can fix/rebuild everything else on the motor with your own two hand and little more than a flat head screw driver and a couple wrenches (literally), and all for under $150 or so. I got my motor dead as door nail, but with good compression for $100 and had it running in a day. It now pushes me and my 14' tinny along right around 20 mph. Not bad for a motor tat only weighs 80 lbs. A good running example could fetch up to $400-$500 if it's purty, less if it's rough around the edges, but runs well. Best of all, you can get virtually any routine parts right here at iboats and any larger parts at other sites like ebay and aomci.org. Here are some handy links that may be helpful. Holler if you get stuck.

FD-13 is a 1959 model. The 18 was built, from 1957, to 1973.

Yes, get that thing running good, so you can demo it to a prospective buyer. If it looks sharp, then that will only add to the valuability.

Re: old johnson 18hp motor

Hi baumer65. The FD is for the 18-20 hp models and the numbers denote the year. My '66 is and FD-20 (first year they made the 20 hp), a '65 is an FD-19 18 hp, a '64 is an FD-18 18 hp, and so on, which makes your motor a 1959 18 hp Johnson (first year of the with, fiberglass cowl I believe). The 18 hp are one of the best pound-for-pound motors ever made. It's good that you have compression. All the rest can be fixed pretty cheap and easy. I would replace the points & condensers, rebuild the carb and reseal the LU all for good measure. It shouldn't even cost $100 to do all of them. Be sure you get 7mm Copper Core spark plug wires. Modern, automotive wires will not work. Be sure you twist the new wires onto the coil posts rather than just jabbing them on there too. These links will walk you through the whole job. You can get all the bits right here at iboats too.

Re: old johnson 18hp motor

That might be a wise move baumer65.....the fact that someone saw the need to dis-assemble the lower unit doesn't bode well for it being a low-cost restoration. It would probably be better utilized as a parts motor; especially if the powerhead is good.

Chuck

PS: It isn't electric start; is it? The electric start "kit" of add-ons brings pretty good money and is compatible with a lot of different models and years.
