I have a honda 7.5hp engine on my new little boat.

The engine starts (eventually) but when you go to low revs it stalls. It also stalls if you rapidly put up the accelorator.

I have repalced the spark plugs and also cleaned the carb. I am unsure of what to set the mixture screw or whether this could caucse this issue?

I also notice there seems to be a screw to adjust air? this seems to be something you are meant to do with your fingers as it has no place to insert a screwdriver. When I got the the engine this was done up tight. I dont know if this is anything.

when the engine is running it seems to work fine. It is only in the low revs although when i was on the water you couldnt put the accelorator to maximum as it would start to choke if that is the right word!

Unfortuantely I don't know the model but it is a pull start one

Points or CDI? That motor should start and run on the second or third pull when cold; full choke, throttle just cracked open.PS:try to find a manual.

Looking down at the top of the powerhead(cover off) do you see a round rubber cover about 3" in dia.? Under that cover should be either a set of contact breaker points or a pulser coil, depending on the year of the motor. Again you need a manual;even a generic small engine repair manual will give you an Idea what you are looking for.

Ok thanks. after experimentation it seems that the engine runs better if we stop air getting into it by reducing the air instake by half. Im thinking now this engine may need some kind of air filter rather than just air passing down this tube? could this be correct?

Thanks

If restricting the air supply(choking) increases the RPM, you probably have a fuel problem. Could be the tank, lines, pump or most likely, the carb is dirty.

Just had a thought, when you replaced the carb after cleaning, was the gasket in good shape? Not specific to that motor but in general a leaking carb base gasket can cause a lean condition.

7.5 HP honda carb gets gummy or dirty so that it won't idle. After a clean, blow, and piano wire, it runs great but after a month of non-use(during inclement weather or business) it won't idle, but it will start but not well... It is a 1986: Is this a common problem for the honda carb, and will seafoam prevent the problem I'm tired of taking off the carb so often. mel
