My neighbor pulled this old Honda 4 stroke out of his garage. He has no idea how old it is and niether do I. It is blue and white and says 100 Honda on it. The serial # is B100-1007629. The thing is a belt driven, two cylinder, 25" shaft. It looks clean but has no spark. He says i can have it for $40. Does anyone know anything about it?

Salty,

All I can tell you is that it is a 10 hp. You can't go wrong for $40.00

my guess would be about ten years old, if it
is clean and looks okay, buy it. Those are good
motors and have proven to be very reliable. they can be hard starting in cold weather though.

Snap it up .There is 40 bucks worth of aluminum scrap and salvageable parts to make it worth that ,even if it is a goner. Now what to do to decide if it is a goner. This engine has been up for awhile so I would first change the oil just to keep any crap in the pan from finding it's way into the powerhead. Then do that spark test again with someone else spinning the motor over and you with a well insulated set of pliers holding the plug wire ,spark plug and all against the valve cover bolts. These older Hondas don't have a tremendous spark when you are pulling them over so you might be missing it.I will happilly give you more as needed and check serial #s to see if you are points or CD .

Oh I'm definately buy it! :D I just need to know a little about it so I don't ruin it. What oil should I use? What gear oil should I use? What type of ignition system does it have? Thanks for the replies.

10W-40 oil, any good quality LU lube is fine. CDI ignition. I have a 1986 7.5, and Hondon's right--the spark isn't like a Merc Thunderbolt. Up here, Hondas (especially the old ones) tend to plug up with salt much easier than other makes if not flushed religiously. Wish I could find 'em for $40! :D

Is it CDI or points? How can I tell? What should I use in the lower unit? How do I tell exactly what year it is? Lots of questions

It's got breaker points !!!! For 40 bks you can't go wrong, even if it's junk. Yes,it has "weak" spark compared to todays motors but you either have spark or you don't. If you take it to a Honda dealer, demand the old timer in the back who has worked on these motors. Someone with experience. Not the new kid. Brkr piots are very ez to trouble-shoot and repair. CD ignition were also bullitproof !! Carbs were a pain but fresh fuel will help.. Exhust valves burnt on motors that just saw only one speed. But don't over-think this just yet. Good luck. I'd give ya $50 for it right now !!!!
