Old gas In Tank And Carbs

I have 1997 Yamaha outboard 90 HP. My problem is that the fuel that's in the tank is old. The tank is full but again its old. Its from before last season. I realize that I must drain tank, change fuel separator. My concern is the fuel that is in the carbs. What do I do with that? Is there a way to drain that out without taking off carbs? Is there anything else I need to do as well? I do not believe the fuel was stabilized either.

There should be a brass drain plug on each carb. If the gas that drains out smells like gas, the carbs might be okay. If it doesn't smell like gas, they'll need rebuilding. Blow the fuel lines clear with compressed air or flush fresh gas through until good gas drains form the carbs.

Likely too late for that. If you do all of the above and it doesn't run properly, tear down and properly rebuild the carbs.

Personally I don't see anything wrong with old gas, I have used old gas, and never had a problem ...... even after it has lost all it's colour ..... still runs fine ...... MSD58, to prevent this problem in the future, you should pull the fuel line while the motor is running until the motor dies and all the fuel has run out of the carbs, then store the motor, it will prevent what you have to deal with now ......

I had every intention of using boat last season. Had a new baby and you know the rest. I know from past experience with older outboards I owned over the years from 60's, 70's & 80's it normal practice to run carbs dry but I was told on the outboard that in question here that was not the practice. I suppose in retrospect if i knew it was going to this long of a layup as this I would drained them out.

Let me ask you this how old was your gas and what type motor and year?

with the 90 yamaha it is ok to run the carbs dry ......... I have many motors and many boats that I use at random, I get free fuel from my sponsors (i'm in racing) and also buy fuel in bulk before the petrol price go up every month, so I always have loads of fuel in stock and in some boats with built in tanks that stand for a year or so ..... and it runs fine with no problems, the fuel never gets older than about a year old though, I ride alot ..... I run big motors and small ones depends in what mood I am ........ my friends mostly drive my bigger boats, I like something with a tiller attached to it ...........

I have had to rebuild a number of motors in the past few years because of fuel which has lost its octane sitting. I can't reccomend it to anyone.

Well a buddy of mine has claim on the 26 gallons of gas that has been sitting. I have no plans to kee it. I just hope my carbs are OK I just had the rebuilt prior to lay up.

Drain the carbs and squirt some Seafoam or the likes into the carbs after draining the fuel lines. Just "maybe" they will clean up enough w/o having to rebuild again so soon.

Stuff that came out the bottom carb smelled like varnish. I spayed some Gum Cutter 2 + 2 into the drain hole till it came out clean.

Yep! That sure the way bad gas smells. Leave the carb plugs out and pump your primer bulb until you get fresh gas coming out. Should fire right up.
