Old gas in my 1995 Yahama 225 Saltwater series

My motor was tuned and serviced ($1765.00) in August of 2008, run for about 3 hours, and has been sitting ever since.
I know I need to drain the tank, about 30 gallons, but I feel I need to "clean" the carbs also....I believe six of them......I've never done this before....not mechanically inclined, but I'm semi-retired.....I'd be interested in doing this myself......Is this practical ??
Are there instructions on the "net" with a step by step procedure ?
Is there anything else I need to consider ??
Your advice is appreciated !!

Welcome to iboats.

Drain the gas, 30gal is a lot to have hanging around ....BE CAREFUL!
Add some fresh gas/oil, some marine gas treatment like Sta-bil and change the fuel filters, charge the batteries.

Have tried to run the motor?
I would run it on the hose and see how it runs.

I'm not trying to discourage you, but this is not for the in-experienced.

I've seen some excellent videos on YouTube for re-building carbs, but not exactly step-by-step. Some were totally wrong, missing key steps!
Some steps were omitted, like stuck screws, scraping gaskets, small parts that can get lost, removal from the engine, linkage removal etc.etc.

Even following a manual can be a challenge!
I love the last step in a manual..."Re-assemble in reverse order"!

Don't forget the tools required!

ONE mistake could be repeated, multiplied by "X" number of carburetors and this will cost you...BIG TIME!
EVERY mechanic hates to hear..." I tried to fix it myself"

Good luck with your decision...and again Welcome to iboats!

If you plan on doing any service yourself on an outboard the pick up a manual and read.
You need the info and specs.
Not being mechanically inclined does not sound like a good thing if you work on it yourself, but everyone needs to get their experience from somewhere. Do you have any tools?

I'd drain tank and entire fuel system, drain each carb, put some fresh gas in tank with some Stabil Marine and give it a run down the river. Maybe you get lucky and all carbs are not plugged up. No need to assume they're plugged and spend money and time cleaning all of them. If it don't run right, then bring it back in and do the carbs. If it don't run right, don't just keep running it or you may have a plugged carb/lean mixture/fry a piston. Good Luck!

Your impeller may need replacement - check the stream when you get it started.

how about pulling a sample first, use glass or clear plastic so yopu can look at it, if its dark it prbably bad. see if and how it runs on fresh gas,as previously mentioned.but don't run old gas until you know if its any good.use it in a lawn mower. good luck
