Old gas , How do I clean it out of carbs and tank?

I just bought a 82 Ranger with a 82 merc 150hp. I bought from a friend,it satfor 2+ years with gas in it, no stabil. The motor was just rebuilt in 98, so it should be in good shape. He started it in the fall and said it would not run, no surprise there. How do I get the gas and varnish out of the system and tanks? Is it something I can do myself or do I have to take it to a shop? Is there any major damage that could have been done? <br />Thanks,<br />Tom

Take the gas out of hte gas tank and dispose of it. I would recommend rebuilding all the cars. I would also change the fuel filter or fuel water filter... replace any worn fuel lines or cracked lines. After that you should be good

Obviously you will no doubt have to remove and clean the carbs also, as I'm sure they are clogged up with crud. Unless you are very lucky!! I doubt that there has been any major damage done, although you may want to squirt some straight TCW-3 directly into the cylinders and turn it over by hand a few times to coat the cylinder walls before you crank it over. Also, don't forget to change the lower unit lube.

greetings <br /> Had a similar problem last year when i bought a boat that was laid up for a few years, to make a long story short have the gas tank pumped out and save yourself a lot of trouble even topping off the tank did not help. old gas is bad gas after i pumped the tank at a cost of $140/85 gals, and changed the plugs and wires water fuel separator and fuel filter it ran like it should, Running it with old gas made it run rough and surge and hesitate. <br /> good luck

Just on the outside, do you have an older vehicle that has a carburator or other stuff(Riding lawn mower). That's how I burn up my older mixed gas. It smokes a little, but not too bad. PDS
