old frozen volvo ?

i found a old 1976 sea king montgomery ward boat. it has a volvo penta inline 4cyl. inboard. also with a volvo drive. i dont know the serial # from the motor but the tag on the boat said it is a 120 hp engine. the boat has not been started in over 10 years but thay said it was running when parked. when i went to look at it i took a bat and some wrenches. the motor would not budge. either with the starter or a wrench. the boat belonged to an old man who has since died and left the boat to his daughter. she lives out of state now and needs to get the boat off her property.
she wants 150$ for the boat and trailer. is it possible to get the motor un frozen? if not is the outdrive worth anything? any help would be much appreciated.

It very well could be the engine is fine and the outdrive is froze up, or maybe just a bearing in the flywheel cover. Without some checking, there is no way of knowing what the problem is or what is good and what is bad.

I'd give 150 bucks for it. I'd tinker with it and see if I could get it going. If not, I'd part out what I could, get rid of the boat and make a utility trailer out of the boat trailer........I have a nice 1976 utility/motorcycle trailer that I made out of a boat trailer about 15 years ago.

Pull the ujpper gear box first, and see if you can turn the ujoints. And see if there is a lot of rust on them.
Then see if the engine will turn over, if not, pull the engine and remove the flywheel cover and see if the engine will turn.

awesome advise! thanks. i think i will buy it and play with it a little. i also own 1978 check mate trimate. it had a 110 merc inline. the merc started knocking and is no good. i found a 1968 100 johnson electramatic. is this a good motor? the owner had it overhauled 2 years ago. he upgraded to a 200hp and is selling the johnson for 350$ is that a good deal?

If the engine is in fact frozen, you can put a few squirts of automatic transmission fluid in each cylinder and let it sit for a while. It does wonders for breaking free a stuck engine...
