My Bride and I have a nice assortment of old fishing lures and stuff that was her grand fathers. His name is Edward Slominski. Muskie was his choice but he fished for all freshwater species. His handmade lures are collectible.

A question I have is regarding braided silk line. Anyone know what time period this sort of line was used? I know braided Dacron and nylon have been around for decades. How about the silk stuff?

Re: Old Fishing Tackle Question

Thanks gonfishn!,
I know the wood lures are collectible. My father in law has sold some, up to $500 for desirable ones. Ed has been written about in the NFLCC and another book that describes Wisconsin lure makers.

Some of the items we have we need help to figure what we have. Like the silk casting line. So cool that back then the spools the line came on are wood, and finished beautiful. Poked around on ebay a little.

Sure wish I could have fished with him like my wife did as a kid. :(

Re: Old Fishing Tackle Question

here's a link where old ED is listed. should be
a good source of info. you have something that
nobody else has... provinence!
http://www.oldfishingstuff.com/nflcc_index.htm
beware of selling them for $500. although tempting,
I believe they could be worth quite a bit more
especially as a collection. a museum perhaps?
http://www.freshwater-fishing.org/
good luck!
M.Y.
ps. can me and musky borrow a few :p

Thanks for the links MY. I have a bunch of stuff, line, hooks, some kind of smaller "grapple hook" type device that my Bride thinks her grand dad used to retrieve snagged lures. "Eds stuff".

Photos are of some of the hand made lures.
Re: Old Fishing Tackle Question

When you compare style of lures from way back when and now little has changed except prices..Lures of today were copied from the lures of yesterday..

Nice collection Pat..The top upper right lure looks to be of fur quality..Many lures in the past were made to look like a Squirrel in color and movement ..These are my most used lures when huntn the Gator..One is a gift from JB but have not got to use it yet...

Re: Old Fishing Tackle Question

Ed tended to copy, or model his baits after existing designs. All the wood lures we have are modeled similar to the "Globe" surface lures. He made jointed baits too. And Suick type as well.

The squirrel looking one in the photo is no doubt modeled after a commercial bait too. Came across a smaller version while digging around in the boxes tonight. Also came across a Johnson Spoon replica. And many more bucktails.

I will post some photos of the details of the wood and bucktail baits construction later this weekend. And post photos of some of the silk line and stuff.

My Bride is very casual about Eds stuff. I'm almost "eyes glazed over" reflecting on the heritage of these items.

Plan on a little bluegill fishing after work tomorrow, gotta go------

Re: Old Fishing Tackle Question

I see some of your lures are like the ones I have..Friends on my musky site suggest that you do a search..(Fishing Lure values)..All kinds of sites here for you to look at..At least four of what you have shown are not that old...Three of the ones I see cost anywhere from twenty to thirty bucks for..the older ones just from what you have shown could go for some big bucks

I see there is a Musky show in Chicago soon..alot of collectors frequent these shows..Here is my email if you want some more info..The wooden Spool and silk braided line is a holder for sure..

muskie403@yahoo.com

Re: Old Fishing Tackle Question

All the lures in the bucket I use for fishing the Fin. All are receint vintage. The old Slominski lures will never see the water.

Note the method Ed used for the clevis on the bucktail. Or his Johnson spoon replica. Od his spoons and bucktails (the hand made ones) the only commercial parts are the barrel swivel, beads, deer hair, and hook. He hand formed the shaft, clevis, spoons or blades, and so on. My wife said Ed would use fake pearls and other jewelry for beads.
