old evinrude with recoil start

I own an older evinrude (4hp? inherited from my grandfather probaly 45 years old unkown model) when i tried to replace the starter rope the recoil spring flew out...is there a special technique or tool to get it back in..it is strong and I can't simply compress it with my hands. thanks for any advice Bill

Hi & welcome aboard,<br /><br />Did the end of the spring bend when it came out?<br /><br />I would recommend a manual for your motor, it is well worth the price. My Seloc manual has a very good section on recoil springs...they can be a bit tricky. FWIW, I usually prefer the factory manuals but they do cost a bit more.

Hi Bill,<br />Might take it to a small engine repair shop(Lawn Mower, Ect.) and see if they will help out with it. I'm sure they deal with that all the time. Just a thought!

WMjf1, Dont know your particular motor but<br />usually you can assemble the recoil with the spring unwound then crank it up and hold it with a clamp or vice and insert the rope.Just be sure<br />the spring is properly attached at both ends.

WMjf1,If you can get us the model numbers,<br />usually on the mountimg clamp, we can detail the year and hp it should help you with a service manual and owners manual.
