i was wondering if anybody out there can tell me how old this 3 h.p. lightning is and if its worth anything, it's been sitting in my bosses shed at least 40 years, he is moving and he has allready moved it twice, it belonged to his father, and it did'nt make the cut for this move, i helped him clean out the shed and he gave it to me, he didnt remember how old it was. But, it's in pretty good shape, for sitting in an old shed for 40 years, paint and shaft and prop are clean,he thinks with a little love, it still runs.I was thinking about cleaning it up and just hanging it off my bar because it looks so cool. the serial # 3034-09884, any help would be much appreciated.
thanks,

No neutral. Spin it around for reverse

Your motor is a 1960 "Lightwin" 3.0 HP. A classic for sure, but not an antique. If it was propelry stored (fogged cylinders or at least left a little oily inside) so it has no internal rust, and the gas tank was drained (so its not all gunked up inside) it just may run. However, chances are that the ignition system is shot and the coil will need to be replaced. Parts should be available. At the very least, the points will be corroded and needing attention.

That motor is not a "runner", meaning that most people that want a small kicker would not want one that old. Its main value is to a collector, and even then its not a particularly collectable model.

Street value $20 untested at a garage sale, $10 scrap at a junk yard, $50 at an Antique Outboard Motor Club swapmeet, and it would probably bring $100 or more on Ebay. If only the coil is bad, $150 to get it running by an outboard shop, or $50 to do it yourself.

True, but if you don't want it...sell or give it to someone who does. Those are great little motors, doesn't take much $$ or effort to get them running, they last forever, and they are a great power option for any small boat...when one or two folks want to hit the lake/pond for fishing.

Well, I disagree. That outboard and its JohnnyRude sisters are the best small outboard ever built. . .by anyone, anytime.

There are thousands in regular use by people who love them like another child.

As a runner she is probably worth $200 to $350. In unknown but not siezed condition I would not accept less than $100.

I concur w/JB.. Awesome little motors! Plan on new coils and file up/reset points, new impeller, carb/fuel tank clean. You probably want to re-grease the mag plate mounting ring if the lever is stiff from sitting.

I respectfully and wholehearted disagree. These motors are loved by both collectors and anglers. MOSTLY by anglers, which is why even a 40 year old outboard like the 1952-67 OMC 3 hp still garners around $300 CDN used.

I'm sorry if I came across wrong. Actually, I hold the old OMC's in high regard. I do believe they are the best outboards ever built, and they really DO last almost forever. In fact I own dozens of them!

The OP was leaning toward keeping it as a collectable, and my thought was that he really should do that becasue its worth more as a keepsake than anything else.

The truth is that OB prices are quite variable and depend on location, location, location, and of course supply / demand.

The motor we are talking about, if a fresh water motor, would go for several hundred in coastal FL or TX. In MN, it would go for half that, but only if it was demonstrated as running. In my area, just lots of them around and not a great demand.

My father-in-law used to search them out all year and then pile them in the car on his annual fishing vacation to Ontario, Canada. He usually got 10x his investement and it paid for his vacation.

I spend my weekends on the water, but if its a rainy day I go to garage sales looking for motors. I rarely pay more than 20 bucks. The big twin on the boat in the picture cost $200 and it was totally reconditioned and runs like new. The Model A Rowboat Motor cost $100 at an estate sale. The rest varied from $1, $5 to $20. I just picked up the twin Scotts last winter. Now I realize they aren't Ole's motors, but they both run and I couldn't pass up $25 for BOTH of them.

Also, this winter I went to an auction of the estate of an OB collector. There were 65 motors sold that day. Reserve bid was $35. Only 5 motors sold above reserve, the rest went to a single collector for $35 apiece.

PS - if you talk to most members of the AOMCI they will say that prices are too inflated and we are actually trying to keep them down so we can still afford to buy them and enjoy them for many years to come. If you want a true gem at a reasonable price, go to an AOMCI swap meet.

That picture would be just perfect if that 9.5 wasn't in it! :p

Actually, that's the best motor I own. A 1970. Its the one used daily and always starts first pull.
JimS123,
nice collection. All those motors look so clean, it's hard to tell which ones you run.
You're in minnesota? I'm just south of the metro.
