Hi all,

Just picked this one up,

The model number is missing off the transom bracket, and there is only a serial number on the freeze plug in the engine block.

The engine's throttle is a lever that connects directly to the timing plate, and there doesn't appear to be any gear select.

I have the engine dismantled already (why waste time?) as it was initially siezed up.

There are no needle rollers at all, everything is supported by bronze bushes. (I know, 24:1 fuel mix).

the cowling is the wrong one, says 4hp yacht twin. But it doesn't fit properly. It also calls for 50:1 fuel mix.

Anyone want to have guess at the age of this little engine? I know it is pre 1964, not sure after that.

almost, but the pic of that had a different exhaust outlet under the cavitation plate. And it had a lever under the starboard side of the cowl, kinda like a gear select lever, mine doesn't.

That appears to be a 4hp Evinrude with the type cylinder head that first appeared in 1974.

There's a number imbossed on the cylinder head. What is it?

Dumb questions....
I see the "M" on alot of omc parts.
What does it stand for?
Is there a number embossed on the block (I have swapped heads) somewhere to show age etc?

Re: old evinrude light twin maybe??

Hi Lark,
What you've got is not all part of the same motor. Looks a bit like the front half of the crankcase is off a 4hp, c.1969 or newer. The block itself looks to be 1968 or older (no place for an upper main needle bearing). The head is later still.
Now, this is all according to what I've seen in U.S. motors. An Australian motor may not necessarily have had the same specs or part numbers for a year-by-year model.
Does the crankcase face have the mating bronze bushing in it or does it have a space for the upper needle bearing? If it has the mate to the bronze bushing then you've definitely got something I've never seen as all of the 4hp models I've ever seen had the upper needle bearing. Your crankcase intake is definitely 4hp as it is much larger than the 3hp it replaced.
Could definitely be unique to overseas markets...
- Scott

Oh yeah... the crankshaft is 3hp due to it not having the counterweights on the crank lobes like the later 4hp models. OMC may have been dumping leftover stock of 3hp in overseas markets after the upgrades were made between 1968 (3hp) and 1969 (4hp)...

- Scott

both crankcase halves mate up. The bronze bushes line up perfectly. I guess as you said, its an Australian model so there may be a few diffences to the US made engines. I was only interested in find out the year for my own curiosity. I know that with the bronze bushes it need 24:1 premix and the ignition is basiclly a smaller version of whats in my Bigtwin.
