I have just bought two evinrude 40hp lark engines.<br />What I would like to know is what year they are, the first one's info is Model: 40872C Serial: A32297. The second is Model: 40103B Serial: 59810. The first one has a selectric shift gearbox, any help with a schematic or explanation on how this works would be a big help. Thanks for your time.

Hi Lark. I also have a 40872. It works via an electromagnet which pulls a spring attached to the gear across the hub. Two wires run all the way down. On mine the green wire is forward and the blue wire is reverse. Do you have the original controls? What color is your motor? Where are you in Australia. If you give me your email address I can email you an easy to read color diagram of the wiring system. I'm at prawady@tpf.com.au

Thanks for that help, I didn't think you would be so quick. No I don't have the original controls, what voltage does the gearcase need? 12v or is it supplied off the motor? N.B. these motors were supplied dissasembled, so I still need to reassemble them, fun :)

Both wires go back to the main plug and take their power forward or reverse from the controls depending on which button you push. Earth is supplied through the motor itself so it is already there. You will almost definately need a manual. My plug has 10 wires running to it. Do you have the plug? How many wires run to it?
