I have a number of questions on an old Evinrude 2 OB.
MODEL YEAR
It's a Model 2502D, SN #E0003182 which I use on my O'Day Daysailor sailboat. I think it is from the early 70's.
1. Does anyone know the exact year?
COOLING
The motor has worked well for me for the couple of years I have owned it, but this year it overheated and quit after about 20 minutes at full throttle this week. This happened the first time I used it. I am using a 40:1 gas:eek:il mix (yes, I know 50:1 is recommended). I drained the fuel at the end of last season, kept the motor in my cellar all winter, filled it with fresh fuel mix and ran it in a bucket of water for a few minutes before taking it out for it's first run this summer.
2. How much cooling water is it supposed to put out when it is running at full throttle? It spits out a spray, maybe about a cup or two a minute. Definitely not a stream...
WATER PUMP IMPELLER
3. What are the symptoms of a bad or worn out water pump impeller?
ADJUSTING THE CARB
After sailing home, we tried to start it and adjust the carb. It is difficult to start, but seems to catch after five or six sharp pulls of the starter rope with the choke on. Then it will not run at idle or at full speed, just in the mid range. It consistently dies as I try to increase or decrease the speed to the extremes, even when the high and low speed carb settings are changed. With or without the choke on, it will run at neither idle nor full speed, just in the mid-speed range.
4. Any thoughts on what this behavior means?
COMPRESSION TEST
I wonder if the compression is too low, I do plan to check it after I dig out my tester.
5. Does anyone know what the normal compression pressure should be for it to run well? Is it measured the same way as for multicylinder OB motors (warm up the engine, turn it over 5-6 times with a screw-in compression tester?
LOWER UNIT OIL DRAIN
6. One last question; I can only find a filler plug is there a drain plug? Thanx for any and all info...
Charlie1939

I can only help with a couple... I have a 79 (?) Johnson 2hp...

#2 Mine spits water out the exhaust, not a continuous steam but a fair amount of spray. I'd think you'd be able to tell from touching the motor it was overheated.

#6 There is only one plug in the L.U. it is the drain/fill plug. You fill from the same plug, with the motor on it's side. Fill slowly to avoid trapping air, and wiggle the prop a bit to try and work out any air that might be trapped in the L.U.

As for your overall description of prob's, I'd imagine I'd start by going through & cleaning/putting a rebuild kit in the carb. Of course compression test would be a good idea... I don't know the spec's, and I'll admit I'm not a 2 stroke guru, but I'd be satisfied seeing anything 90+. You did try a fresh plug, right?? Sometimes the best place to start is with the easiest thing to fix. I've had bad plugs right out of the box.

Anyway, hope this helps.

Brent
