old chrysler 45hp knocking

hi, i have an old chrysler 45hp that i got from a friend but its knocking, he said he just had an impellor replaced but it seems like there is plenty of play between the flywheel & pistons & prop, no matter what end you turn its all 3.move prop & piston & flywheel wont move for a bit & in reverse. could it be put togeather wrong?

Hello aussiemic and welcome to Iboats. There should be zero play between turning the flywheel and seeing the pistons move. If there were my guess is there would be all kinds of timing issues. There is however quite a bit of free play on the propeller shaft. It should turn almost a 1/4 turn in each direction of free play. This is because to the gaps between the faces of the gears and the clutch that gives you this free play.
