I have an old single trumpet style electric boat horn made by Sparton. I believe it's original equipment off a 1955 Glasspar Sport Lido. Anyone know how many amps this thing would draw??

Amp Draw For Old Boat Horn

Amp Draw For Old Boat Horn

Submitted this earlier, but on the wrong forum. I'll try it here. I have an old single trumpet style electric boat horn made by Sparton. I believe it's original equipment off a 1955 Glasspar Sport Lido. Anybody know the number of amps this thing would draw??

Don't know the amp draw but some of those old horns were quite high and required a relay to operate them. If you have an amp meter (capable of at least 10 amps) you could put it in series with the power lead and measure it.

Re: Old Boat Horn Amps

Most horns 15-20 amp fuse...... try it with a 15 and lean on it.... if it blows go to the 20. When I upgraded my horn in my car I had to go from 15 to 20 ;)

Hot wire it and see if it still works.... it's as old as I am

bhile: Thanks for the reply. I will check with the amp meter. I have hooked the horn wires directly to a 12v battery to see if it worked and it works fine. Would that indicate I don't need any type of relay and can wire it directly to the push button on the dash?

Bob VT: Thanks for the advise. Also, I did hot wire it and it worked great. So being the same age, that should make you feel pretty good!!

If the wire and switch can handle the current then you won't need a relay. Its going to depend on what you find. If it is 10-20 amps then I would use a relay to be safe.
