Re: old alpha one

Would need abit more info, but it sounds as if your shift shaft is "off a spline".... When you put the drive halves back together, did you have the shift shaft in the lower half all the way clockwise and the prop locked CCW like you described for putting the drive back on the boat? Then put the top half on with the shift shaft shoe pointing at 12 oclock. (you need to ensure the shift shift is properly aligned when putting the halves back together).

Time to pull the drive, and before taking if apart, see what you can do with the shift shoe. Is it full fwd with prop locked CCW, and can you turn the shift shaft CCW to the 11 and 10 oclock positions for neutral and reverse? If not, time to split the drive and re-align your shift spines.

Re: old alpha one

Did you manually line up the splined shaft in the upper shoe or just try to bolt it together?

Re: old alpha one

you might be right, that it is a problem with the remote control. "by the book" means you have already proved to yourself that with the lower shift cable disconnected from the shift plate, that you can engage neutral, forward, and reverse by pushing and pulling the cable by hand. if that is the case, then with remote cables disconnected from shift plate, prove that the cables move freely and the full movement called for by the manual is found with remote control movement. that should isolate which end the problem is coming from.

Re: old alpha one

mornin. well i took off upper and lower cables off shift plate and the shifter moves freely into fwd and rev. and push for neutral. so its got to be the way i installed the lower to the upper unit.shift shaft all the way clockwise and the prop locked up all the way counter clock wise. line up water tubes and shaft and push up, install both side nuts first and then check to see if it shifts ok. sounds easy enough. ya sure. attempt #5

Sounds like your cables may be out of adjustment! Have you watched achrises vid on how to adjust your shift linkage If you turn your shifter to 12 oclock and its in forward then 11 nutrel and 10 reverse and that all checks out it has to be the linkage! Your not pushing the throttle only button on your merc control are you? Have you verified that the cables are moving at the motor when your try to shift?

Re: old alpha one

Did you separate the upper/lower? Whadja find? (Or did I miss the part where you took your outdrive off the boat and actuated the shift shoe on the drive and it worked alright?)

Re: old alpha one

The reason it is dropping down is you forgot to install the stainless washer over the splined shift shaft on the lower half.
