I recently purchased an older 9.9 electric start 2 stroke Mercury outboard. It was taken off a pontoon boat that was used in the lakes of Kentucky. It was used with remote start, steer, shift/throttle controls, but I want to put it on a small boat and use it as a standard tiller motor. It has a standard tiller handle and on the end of the shaft inside there are slots to connect the cables for the shift/throttle cables. There's a harness with a round plug that I assume went to a control box to control the starter and kill switch. there are wires going into the tiller handle, but they're only for the kill switch button on the end of the tiller handle. I see no logical place where there was ever a start button on the motor. Any help with finding the parts needed to convert this back to a standard "old school" tiller handle would be greatly appreciated. I'm fixing this motor up for my son so that my grandsons can learn how to operate a boat the same way me and their daddy did! They'll be a little spoiled though with an electric start motor!
Thanks in advance for any help someone can provide. I'd love to find an owners/operators manual on this motor or even just a picture to see if this model was specifically make to use with a control box, or if there is a place for mounting a starter button that I just haven't found.

+1 for 1989 model year.

Looks like there is a 'tiller shift' and a 'side shift' version of the motor. So, assuming to are looking to take a 'side shift' and make it a 'tiller shift' (and throttle).

It might be easier to get a tiller version of the same/similar motor.

Thanks guys! It is a 1989!, and as far as shifting goes, there are grooves and notches on the end of the tiller handle shaft for cables to connect to, but there are none there. Those can be ordered. The odd part is the side of the lower cowling has a groove cut out for the cables from a control box to go through. It looks very much factory (see pic). So, the tiller handle didn't have a lot of rods and linkages and crap to shift and operate the throttle, it had cables that went from tiller handle to the other side of motor to the more conventional cable connections. Also, it's an electric start motor, but there's a harness that comes out of the motor with a round plug with about 7 pins in it. Obviously, it went to a control box with a key switch. The motor itself doesn't seem to have a place to put a starter button. Right in the middle in the front is a combination manual choke and adjustments for idle speed - probably for trolling. So, if I try to make this a simple small aluminum boat motor, I either pull the rope to start, or come up with a place to mount a starter button. Cool motor, but a bit odd. The original owner had it on a 20' pontoon boat that he used to fish regulated lakes in Kentucky. The boat came with the motor with a console with control box and steering wheel. It also has the tube and the arm for cable steering.
