old 25hp vs. new 25hp

if my 1975 25hp johnson isn,t putting out 25hp at the prop can i have the engine worked on to put out 25hp at the prop or would it be cheaper to buy a newer 25<br /><br />i'm running on a lake with a 25 hp max limit and really don't want to re-mark a bigger motor

Buy a newer 25 hp motor. The money you would spend trying to juice up your existing motor would go a long way towards a newer one!<br /><br />By the way, if you want a brand new motor, Nissan/Tohatsus are very well-priced compared to the competition...

By the way, make sure you get the correct shaft length for your boat. It's likely a long shaft engine.<br /><br />Finally, don't forget you'll recoup a few dollars (or several hundred) selling the old motor. Engines by themselves are worth almost as much as old engine/trihull combos!
