I just got an old 20hp Merc that has been sittiong in my brother's shed for the last 5-7 years. It ran perfectly when put in there. This motor is a conglomeration of 2-3 dead motors (I know PH and LU came from different motors) to make one good one. My dad, who put it together years ago, believes all parts came from 68-72 models. I'm assuming at minimum it needs a carb kit, fluid change, and water pump rebuild. It also looks like some mice made a home in it. The motor isn't locked and seems to be in good condition overall. Am I missing anything in the prep to get it going? Wher do you find serial nos or model/year info on Mercs so I can be sure to get the right parts?

Sitting that long I would borrow a bore scope to look at the sleeves or pull cyl. head and scuff out surface rust if any found with fine S.S. wool. Then run some "Engine Tune" thru it before you go out WOT...... :D
