I got a few questions for all the old merc owners or old wellcraft owners.
The questions I got about the engine are pretty simple. I'm needing any info on replacement parts, what people are using to fix these things and where the stuff comes from. Ive heard rumors about rectifiers from radio shack, and solenoids from fords, But I don't have any solid witnesses to any of it. As far as I know my mark 35a runs. Im going to assume it died on the last owner because he assumed that the whole thing was wired right when in truth the stator and rectifier where not hooked up at all only magneto, and so the battery prob died. I dono. but he destroyed the starter beating on it trying to get it to start, and its not rebuild-able. Also its painted and you cant see the part numbers on it. Trying to find a replacement start is already hard enough being a 50 year old motor, much mess not having any numbers to go by. The wiring harness was cut and, really decayed to the point of crumbling so ive completely re-wired everything, with copper wire, except the wires running from the stator to the rectifier, they seemed fine. I did manage to find a wiring diagram that seems to be accurate, so Im going by that for now. well leave it at that for now for motor.
For the boat. only thing I have to go by is it is a 1969 wellcraft. It looks like a ski boat. it had two forward facing seats with backwards facing seats mounted together, with ski hooks off the back. I'll post some pics on here at some point maybe later this week. Is there like a model name for wellcraft boats of this era? I don't have a wind shield and just searching online junkyards for wellcraft windshields don't really help lol. I wouldn't mind finding another intact one to see how things where done to restore it as close as possible. Oh one other note, its like 13 and 1/2 foot long. I guess that makes it a 14 foot? and fiberglass. the only proof i have that its even a 1969 is I have all the registry records for the last 3 owners. and even some of those say 59, but I know that's prob incorrect.
Only other question, Is this engine good enough? all i really want to do is cruise along, and maybe have like a towing inner-tube. Bout what kinda speed can we expect? I'm not expecting to out run jet skis or anything like that, just enough to make tubing fun and not take all day to get to a fishing spot and back to the dock lol.
