Woo Daves 1/4-3/8 oz. black & blue jig with a Zoom Super Chunk trailer. I use a 6.5 foot balanced pitchin stick with a Curado & 20-25lb Trilene Big Game. Find the nastiest, gnarliest pile-o-sticks and chuck it in the middle. I've noticed that if fish are active, swimming it with a crawfish-like action seems to work well and covers water much faster than the traditional pitch/flipping method.

If there are mostly Kentucky/spotted bass around, I'll switch to a smaller Bitsy Bug with a natural crawfish looking trailer like Madman's or Yums. I'd also fish for them around rocks/bridge pilings and docks as well.

I don't do too much jigging for bigmouths, but do plenty of jigging for smallies and eyes. Swim them, snap jig them, lift n drift them, crawl them, verticle jig them, vary the amount of lift them, rip n drop across shallow flats, slip bobbers, etc. My jig head box weighs more than all the rest of my lures! d:)

First you need to trim the weed guard back to where it just reaches the hook point. Also fan it out some. Bitsy bugs are the ones I use the most. with Johnson jigs second. Always in a natural color like brown or black. In clear lakes a flouro leader is a must. I like to fish them deep, 10 to 20 feet on chunk rock or steep bluff banks. Sometimes dragging the jig up the ledge rather then working it down. When the fish are picky I'll glue a small piece of Styrofoam right under the jig head to make it drop nice and slow. I used to use uncle josh trailers but as of late I am hooked on Berkly power trailers, frog or craw. On heavy pressured fish I use the coffee can method a lot. That is let it drop to the bottom, imagine the jig in a coffee can, lift the rod tip just enough to keep it in the can, let it drop again. Funny thing with jigs, sometimes the fish will hammer them hard, other days you have to set the hook on barley detectable strikes.

My set up is a good baitcaster (Curado, or PT) with a 6'6" MH fast action rod, spooled with 15 pound power pro.

Re: Okay Jig Fishermen

I was cutting the tails off the Strike King, Craws and using them for jig trailers. I liked the way the claws looked floppin around behind the jig. Got tired of cutting up my plastics and bought some Zoom Swimin chunks. But a guy I see at tournaments every weekend swears by NetBait, Paca Chunks, so I bought a couple of bags of those. They look like a crawfish with the tail cut off.

Full circle to my original idea, but I don't have to cut the tails off with these.

Thanks i like to hear what others are doing and how,im just starting to use jigs more here, but im fishing medium depth water (15-20 foot)using a poping method, pop it up about a foot and let it fall.no super results yet but still early in the learning curve.hard to flip around here seems everbody beats the bank with a flipping stick so im going deep, but most the techiniques should apply.i like your mental image flathead of the coffecan.
