OK to run electric start/alternator equipped engine without battery?

I've heard that you can blow alternator diodes if you disconnect the battery while the engine is running (like with a 1/2/both switch). That makes me wonder if it is OK to run the engine at all when it is disconnected from a battery? I have a faulty battery that won't hold a charge and don't really need to replace it as the Nissan 9.9hp pull-start is easy enough. Just want to make sure it would be OK to leave the wires disconnected (and safely separated/insulated of course).

Yes, you will be fine, if it is a modern 9.9 4-stroke. What is your actual model?
