....and using a few choice words directed at it lol... So here's the deal, I consider myself to be pretty competent when it comes to engines, and even though this is the biggest 2-stroke I've worked on, I've gotten it pretty well down.... or so I thought...

Anyhow, here's the deal, I've used my boat, which has a '75 merc 850 4cyl., to do a good bit of trolling, as well as some higher rpm cruising (typically when cruising I'm running in the 2-2500 range, with the occasional 5-10 min of WOT). Up until this past friday morning, I have been able to troll around 600-700rpm's for hours on end with no issues at all...actually surprised me how well this thing runs when doing this... Anyhow, this past friday morning I took my two oldest boys out to teach them how to troll. We was running for about 45min. when my oldest boy say's "Hey dad, your motor is smoking".. I turned around and noticed the tell-tale bluish/white smoke that goes along with a 2-stroke that's loading up.. it ended up that it started smoking so bad (also she started stinking pretty badly) that we all reeled in, and I was able to raise the throttle up to 1500, then 2k rpm's with just a second or two of hesitation when I first started opening it up. Ran it around 2k for a minute or two, then idled it back down to 650... an hour later, same deal...

After I got her home, I pulled the plugs (installed new plugs when I got the boat back in April) and they looked fine.. not wet, burnt..nothing. Checked spark on all plugs and it appeared to be just as strong as it's been since new plugs put in. I also have checked my carb settings and they are set exactly where I've had them since I re-adjusted them a couple months ago. I'm using the same gas from the same station, as well as the same exact mixture out of the same gallon jug of oil I've had for the last 5-6 tanks of gas run through. What else is there that could be causing this sort of issue?? I also should add that me and buddy went out and fished friday night, until 5am, and it did the same thing so we ended up just anchoring.

An hour of trolling at idle is doing very well. you didn't mix up an extra oily batch of fuel by chance?

To be honest, from day 1 of trolling with this motor, I was really shocked at how well it did perform..when I first got it, before I ever tried trolling, I never dreamt it would run as smooth as it did at that low of an rpm.. prior to last friday, there has been numerous days that I've trolled for a good 2-3hrs straight and never once did it load up. I also keep an eye on temp.

Actually, friday morning I did start to think maybe I accidentally screwed up the ratio.. however I have a 2nd tank in the boat that I had just mixed that same morning, which I know I did the right ratio... it still performed the same after switching to that tank.

Maybe a hotter plug would help? One of the pros here will probably chime in about a better plug to use.

If you troll a lot...might be a good idea to get a kicker motor to take care of the trolling duties.

I did read up about running a hotter plug when I bought the new ones, but was concerned about pre-ignition, as well as some other issues they may cause..

Well, to be totally honest with you, I never thought I would be using this boat to do much trolling at all.. ya know, the occasional 30min here or there when I take the family out... but now, I think I got my wife and two oldest hooked on trolling! lol So, adding a plate and kicker has been crossing my mind as of late, just can't afford anything right now. When I picked this boat up,the original plan, was to take the family out for recreational boating on it, and still use the tracker for all my fishing needs.... now we find ourselves heading out for a mixture of fishing and recreation, and the tracker is by no means built for any type of rec.

I should add that, when the ol' girl starts to smokin, once I get her up to 1500+rpm's, it only takes about 10-15 seconds before the smoke completely clears up and purrs like a kitten, can idle it back down to trolling speeds for another 45-60min before the smoke/smell returns...

The plugs on that machine are likely gapless, and a hotter plug has never been recommended. It doesn't take too much for them to load up at idle, as you have seen. Maybe you can lean the idle misture a small bit (1/8 turn CW, bottom carb first, then test it). Recheck the acceleration as the idle mixture needs to be rich to have good acceleration.

It sounds like the bleed restrictors in the transfer port area might be missing, take the covers off and look for three plastic plugs herebleed-restrictors.jpgView attachment 159262 and these are not available at Walmart or Pep Boys - you'll have to get them from Mercury.
You can also try a synthetic oil like I do (Amsoil Saber 100-1) at a 70-1 mixture.

Re: Ok..this 850 has me scratching my head now...

Running that motor at a higher mix ratio than 50::1 has never been recommended by the manufacturer. Running non-TC-W oil is not recommended by me. I recommend 50::1 mix using a TC-W certified oil.

Bleed restrictors are supposed to assist with idle quality. I have never found any evidence to support that however.
