Just as I was getting on plane she went "bang!!".
My heart sank cause I knew what this indicates.
This was only my 4th time out with this new to me motor.

Anyway, my question is. Would it be OK to run slow
with the motor? I just don't want to miss out on a
fishing season tinkering with this thing.
I figure this could be a good winter project if it can wait.
Btw, I already checked the shift rod coupler and it was fine.

FYI. '81 25hp johnson

Re: OK run with a bad clutch dog?

I would run it at slower speeds and have no problem doing it. As long as it's not popping outa gear no damage is actually being done. But each time it pops out it takes it's toll on the forward gear and the clutch dog when it slams back into gear.

You could try to adjust the shifter linkage first before assuming it's a complete loss. I don't know that model specifically but usually it's not hard. I would try that first.
