The pic is of me at Lake Shasta this early August. I'm a bit proud, being 59, and not having skied in a bunch of years. Whoopee, I can still do it, but I paid the price the next day.

I need to do it more often but I have not developed a family boat driver that I trust to tow me.

Maybe some old dude will be the first to post in wakeboarding. That I'd have to see8)

HeII, Tommays, it was all I could do to hang onto the rope!:p I ski with double handles. I used to always pull then behind my back, hold them with one hand and just lean back into the rope and relax for long runs. Could even go outside the wake like that if the water was calm.

This time, I had trouble pulling myself forward far enough to get the handles behind my back but I did manage to do it. The next day, there was no way. Just not enough muscle left.

LimitedTime, it was up on a single. I cheated a little 'cause I bought a pair of wide nosed shaped skiis. (one set up as a single) They are easier to get up on 'cause the nose is wider when you're coming up on plane. Once up, the waist is narrower to give you reasonable manueverability. The one drawback to the shaped ski is that the wide nose throws up a lot of water in your face (while turning) where my Maha did not.

My old wood Maherajah is all in pieces while I restore it to it's former glory. Now all I need to do is to restore the user to his former glory. It might have all been a different story if I had tried to use it. But I will before I am done.

Re: Ok, I'll be the first.

[colour=blue]I'm 44, with arthiritis on L2 & L3 (from too many silly skiing fopars in my younger days). I gave up skiing because I didn't want to end up in a wheelchair. But the call of glass water was too much, I decided to bulk up a bit and also began wearing a motorcycle kidney belt (excellent back support!!).

My skiing is now all but painless, including recovery time. I'm even learning to barefoot!

My favorite ski is an old timber blackmax, very stable. But I'm using my connelly comp 2 more and more as my back loosens up.

Boom, there are exercises you can do specifically for slalom skiing, I highly reccomend them.

Talk is cheap Aldo! Howza 'bout some pictures?:p

What are these excercises? Glad you were able to get by the arthritis. I don't have any but know that that can be debilitating.

Boom be carefull on an old wooden ski. About 20 or so years ago I was sking on an old Cypress Garden ski (probably bought in the late 50's or early 60's by my Mom, had those old plastic white boots on it) that split right down the middle, my leg went down thru the boots, up to about midway of my thigh. Thought I had lost my leg when I fell. Had to cut the boot to get it off my mangled leg. My leg wasn't broke but it sure had splinters and a rash out of this world. Hurt like he!!.

Just be sure she's still solid.

Thanks for the real life heads up Reel Poor. That was actually the same but rather gruff advice that I got from Maherajah, when I called them and asked them what kind of finish they used on it. They still make that ski today and call it the Classic. It was a real pioneer in the HiPo water ski world. Here's an interesting link. There is some history on one of the tabs.

http://www.maherajah.com/skis_classic.html

Although I am probably 20 lbs heavier than when I used to drive it hard, I figure that I am not likely to put the hammer down much anymore. I just gotsta take it out for at least one last spin.

It's laminations do seem to be solid. I made little sanding dies to properly reshape the edges and I am going to give it a good soaking in CPES before I apply the finish coat.

Re: Ok, I'll be the first.

Oh to bring back the glory days - used to do that on my Connelly 4 or 5 mornings a week - we would meet at 6:30 am and ski before work (I was working at the marina, so it was easy). Slalom, trick, barefoot. BUT, that was a long time ago, a shoulder operation, and a lot of pounds ago. I would pull so hard on the turns I would literally pop my shoulder out of joint (but that was really from a football injury). Haven't skied in about 15 years - miss it, but life changes.

Re: Ok, I'll be the first.

[colour=blue]I couple of months before the season begins I try to do 1/2 hour a day of hand weights to beef up the forearms and I bike ride for the thighs. One of the hardest things on the old back is the veranda over the toolshed. Since I have been working on the farm (Began december last year) that has all but gone.

A mate of mine actually hires a personal trainer every october to help him get into 'skiing' shape.

I'll try and get some pics this season, boom. I have got a 10 minute video of my daughter, daughters boyfriend and boyfriends brother doing skiing, wakeboarding, surfing (behind the wakeboat), tricks and footing but it's way to long to post here.

Re: Ok, I'll be the first.

You should be heading into your season now huh Aldo? Must be 'cause we are certainly leaving ours. We've had a pretty good indian summer for the PNW but all good things must come to an end and today might be it. Rain and cold. Yuk!

By the way, do they wear bikinis in Australia? They sure don't in Oregon and Washington. If you do see girls out on the boats they are almost all wearing t-shirts and shorts. Maybe it's really better that way.

Re: Ok, I'll be the first.

[colour=blue]It's the start of spring here and last week we had 3 days over 95F, yeah - they wear bikinis 8)8)8) .

Problem is, we have been in drought for over 5 years now. Just went onto stage 2 water restrictions (no car washing, no lawn watering). My lake is at 18% capacity and falling, if this trend continues the lake will be empty by march '07.

But the bikinis want sun, not water 8) (every cloud has a silver lining).

I picked up an old Cypress Garden slalom ski at a 2nd hand shop for $5 still with the original boots on in mint condition, you can see it was used like once or twice ..... I'm gonna keep it as a collectors item ....

Pretty buff for a almost old dude paulie but that knee board looks really brutal. What is it that is pulling you? From the height of the rope, it looks like it has a ski pylon?

Re: Ok, I'll be the first.

Nice paulie. I used to ski a lot, actually did a lil bit of local comoetition slalom skiing. Haven't skied but a couple of times in the last ten years due to back problems and none since I had back surgery three years ago. I feel as I would be ok giving it a try but I'm just a lil apprehinsive.

Have you ever tried slalom skiing on a 35 foot rope at 32 mph? Thats the 7th cut in rope length and speed where 11 cuts are possible. The 11th cut is to a rope length of 30 ft and 30 mph. What a blast. It's sooooo fast and the acceleration is unreal.
