I will only say in the past Hummingbirds had so many problems just seeing bottom that it will be a long time before I even look at one. For a couple of years there was always 1 or 2 threads saying can not see bottom above trolling speed. Also there resolution was very poor.

Having said that since the matrix came out has been a lot better. For me just hard to forget all the people with trolling speed only fish finders. Most that have bought birds lately seem to be happy with them.

I agree it is a very hard to make the choice. If I buy a new unit it will be Lowrance, Furuno, Eagle or Garmin.

To make it even harder consider that many new units can network, so it your want to add a temperature sensor for the live well Just plug it in to the network, same with fuel flow sensor, gps, radar. So you can use one screen and see every thing even get miles per gallon readings if have a fuel flow sensor and GPS or water speed sensor.

I been stuck with my old 1985 depth finder for manny years because I like many of the things it can do that the new units can not do. An example is fishing 400 feet of water I can turn on bottom track. In that mode it will dispaly the bottom and up any amount 10 feet or more. I normally set bottom and up 20 feet. So fishing 400 feet the top will be 380 feet and the bottom 400. If it gets deeper say 500 then it would display 480 to 500. This spreads out the bottom so you can see rock fish in deep water with enough power. New unit only have 4 times zoom fishing 400 feet would see 300 to 400 feet and mean the fish on the bottom will not show more that one pixel a lot of the time.

What do you think of the new Sturgeon Reg where can only keep 3 sturgeon a year and must tag as soon as you catch one?

If you can hold out until the boats shows in Jan and Feb there are always lots of party boat captains to ask questions of about fish finders. I find you get more honest answers from them than the saleman in the fish finder booth no matter the brand.

I had a Hummer back in '89, when they first started going from flashers to LCD. Couldn't see it very well during the day. Probably fixed that problem by now.
