I have a 1960 evinrude with no spark.new points condenser and different coils but not new but do look brand new.want to know when u turn the tiller hander (i believe it's called )to stop-- what happens to make it stop ?????? grounds the points ???? grounds the coil ?????/ and how does it do it ?????? i don't mind buying new coils but i want to know before i do as it looks like the coil-point plate and brass plate underneath is not right. I will appreciate any answers --thank u and good night. steve b.

Give us a model number.
Depending on the horsepower pretty sure stopping is done simply by slowing the motor till it stops.
Be sure coils are placed correctly I believe there is a ridge on the plate, coils should line up with it.
This sets the air gap to flywheel.Be sure plate is not wobbly.Set points to .020.
One wire to points one wire to ground.Again depending on year and size, pretty
sure there is no kill switch.
If it is a larger motor there is a kill switch.
Switch is open to run closed to stop.If it is shorted or miss wired:: no spark.

Some of the older Johnny/rudes you just idled down till they stalled. Ground the wire coming from the coil to the points to stop spark. That is to say the points/coil/condensor interconnect (on each point). If you connect one point to the other through a switch, both points will ground through each other, killing both sparks.
I personally prefer to use two diodes, each 'pointing' to the points, and connected together at their other ends. Ground the connected ends to kill both sparks. This makes for only one kill wire running to the dash.

If your armature (coil) plate is real floppy then your going to need a new one. I suspect that since they have like 3 dissimiliar metals in that joint and all the sparks return through them that they get that loose from electrolysis.

Oven those coils at 160F or so and see what comes out. If there's water in em they'll crack to peices & turn whitish, if they're the old pink ones. If your getting no spark from either point verify that the points are ultra-clean and set to a .020" max gap. They fire at opening, btw.

Finally, watch out on those secondary wires, they can bite bad. (Personally, i've seen over -180v pulses on them occasionally)
