Ok I just rebuilt a 90hp johnson,~1994,
after the original owner burned it up.
I got every thing back together, and now the
short quick alarm comes on( you know a beep and a space and so on).
There is plenty of oil in the oil tank.
Also one bank of cylinders becomes more hot
MUCH more quickly than the other, the right hand side. Brand new water pump and the indicator stream is going solid.
If it is the thermostats is there a way to test them, and the dreaded VRO-2 pump?
thanks

I would put 50-1 mix in tank for breakin and until I was sure VRO was working. Short pulses every 20 seconds low oil in oil tank. Continous short pulses no being pumped. Place mark on oil tank oil level should go dowm. VRO pump about 50/1 all time , you use 12 gal gas you should use close to a quart of oil, or connect 10 inch 1/4 clear hose to pump oil intake fill hose with oil run engine to clear air. At 800 rpms and 5 pulses of pump the oil should go down 1 inch. At full throttle 1 inch in 3 pulses. Test thermostat
hot water with thermometer should be fully opened at app 145 degrees

I have performed this test also, Also the current version of the pump is not a variable ratio pump, and is the current OMC recomended. I had trouble with one of mine, but just replaced them both 2yrs ago (I have two on my motor)

Also here is a interesting place to shop for a unique version of this pump, have heard good stories on the web about these. Its called a carb oiler, these are the engineers who designed these pumps. I bet this is what caused the motor to blow in the first place?

Good Luck
http://www.dfitechnologies.com./

should read: these engineers are the designers of the current OMC pumps, I beleive they started this company when OMC went bankrupt.

I have a 1989 motor, so you may have this current version of the pump, That would be helpful if you use DFI Tech.

I went to the dealer today and he even said not to mess with putting a new VRO-2 in.
I think I will just run 50:1 mix.
And I checked the thermostat and from what I can tell niether works.
I ran the motor with out them and it runs fine.
(I think they just help the motor get to proper temp when its cold out, and its been around 85 here)
Thanks agian

I would not leave the stat out, unless you like lots of carbon. A thermostats job is to maintain a minimum engine temperature to facilitate clean cumbustion, not so much for cold morning start-ups.

Did you bleed the air out of the oil line? Then run the engine on pre-mix untill the oiler could prime? Then keep the engine on pre-mix untill you confirm oil usage? The beeping is normal untill pump is primed.

I would perform a engine temp. check per your manual at idle & high rpm. The test for mine is 145 +/- 15 at idle with 70 deg intake water, and max 120 @ 5000 rpm (under load only) measurements are taken at top of t-stat pockets using a digital pyrometer and another option would be to use thermomelt sticks. Good Luck and let me know how it works out and dont forget to use a break-in mixture of 25:1
